About Scenes of Time - wildlife and nature photography

Yet we behave as though we control nature. We don't. We can't. Depression, anxiety, and many other 21st century "dis-eases" may merely be symptoms of our underlying Nature Deficit Disorder. I don't need a psychiatrist to diagnose me as a basket case while I race through the hustle and bustle of daily life, but it's nice to know modern science is finally catching up. Studies have shown that simply being in nature raises levels of white blood cells and lowers blood pressure. National Geographic suggests viewing the natural world through photographs may have a similar effect.

Because now, every purchase supports eco-protection efforts worldwide! Learn More These pictures don't just capture nature, time, and our interaction with the world. Hopefully they can serve to remind us not to get overly caught up in the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day. --Tom Tortorich
Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, "forest preserves" were Tom's only glimpse into the natural world. Living almost entirely detached from nature for the first two decades of his life has given Tom a unique eye for capturing its beauty. Every photograph in Scenes of Time captures a unique moment that will never appear exactly the same again. Some scenes show civilization's transformation of nature. "There's one I took from the top of the Sears Tower that says it all," Tom says. "Looking down on the grid of electric light and civilization is mind-boggling. I can't help remembering that when you're living down there, you can never look up. All you see is light pollution." When Tom first glimpsed the Milky Way, he said, "I had no idea that this was over our heads, over our houses, the whole time." Tom hopes his art can help us all remember that there's more out there than meets the eye. "Modern-day life has made us all myopic. I hope my pictures do more than just capture nature, time, and our interaction with the world. I want to help people escape being caught up in the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day," Tom says. Tom's photography, short stories, essays and travelogues have appeared in national magazines and award-winning publications. Tom has worked as a photo journalist, sports photographer, newspaper Editor, and graphic designer. In 2005, he founded ttdesigns, a graphic and web design company. Tom's photography serves as the backdrop for many of the print and web marketing initiatives he spearheads, but he sees something unique in his Scenes of Time photography that can't be expressed through his corporate design work. "I've never walked into a 24-Hour Mart and seen anything truly unique. But that's exactly what you see every time you walk out your front door," Tom says. "Now our relationship with nature is at a critical threshold. If you blink, it may be gone. But when the shutter blinks," Tom pantomimes with a forefinger and thumb, "ch-chcht," he says, "it's frozen in time forever. To see the world in a grain of film..." Scenes of Time depicts some of the more fragile ecosystems on our planet. Part of Tom's hope in taking these photos is to raise our collective eco-awareness. Part of his hope in selling them is to support worldwide eco-protection efforts. We hope you enjoy the Scenes of Time. |

Human beings subconsciously share an inter-connectedness with the web of life, a deep affinity with nature rooted in biology.
We hope you enjoy the Scenes of Time. Now more than ever.
Scenes of Time grew out of photographer Tom Tortorich's reverence for nature as much as his love of photography.
